Many African coasts once received their names from the goods traded there: the Gold Coast, the Ivory Coast or the Pepper Coast.

The Gambia has a different nickname: “The Smiling Coast of Africa”.

Looking at the map, with a little imagination you can even see a smile in the country’s distinctive shape and the course of the Gambia River.

But The Gambia’s real smile is found in its people: in their warmth, hospitality and strong sense of community.

At the same time, the country also faces challenges. Good education, healthcare, clean water and economic opportunities are not a given for everyone.

Together with our partners on the ground, we work to create opportunities that go beyond short-term assistance and can have a lasting impact.

Helping Hands Academy works together with partners in The Gambia to create educational and development opportunities with a lasting impact.

Many people in The Gambia have enormous potential. Yet good educational opportunities, vocational training, reliable infrastructure and concrete ways to develop that potential are often lacking.

This is exactly where we start.

We combine education and training with practical projects and the development of local structures. This also includes initiatives in healthcare, water supply and sustainable energy.

Our aim is not simply to provide short-term assistance, but to create the conditions for solutions that can last.

For us, it is essential that responsibility is taken locally and that people are increasingly able to shape their own future.

Those who support us are not simply investing in individual measures, but in education, independence and sustainable development.

At the same time, our work makes a concrete contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Of the 17 goals, five are particularly central to our work:

Big ideas begin with small steps.

Smiling Coast Academy is our long-term vision: a place where education, vocational qualifications and practical experience come together and where people can develop new perspectives for their future.

We are still at the beginning of this ambitious project. But we have already taken the first step: With our language school in The Gambia, we are already creating concrete educational opportunities and pathways to international qualifications.

We want to build on this.

In the long term, Smiling Coast Academy is intended to combine language teaching, practice-oriented training, digital skills and vocational qualifications with sustainable infrastructure and international cooperation.

For us, this is about more than transferring knowledge. We want to create structures that connect learning with practical experience, strengthen local responsibility and can also become economically sustainable in the long term.

Step by step, a vision should become a place where people can shape their own future.
