Language School

International Language Hub & Testing Center

Learn languages. Gain qualifications. Create opportunities.

The language school is part of the Smiling Coast Academy and therefore part of the educational programme offered by Helping Hands Academy e.V.

Our goal goes far beyond traditional language teaching. We want to support people in The Gambia in acquiring the skills and qualifications they need to shape their own future – in their own country or, if they choose an international educational or career path, well prepared and through legal channels.

For us, language is not an end in itself.

It is a prerequisite for vocational training, university study, professional qualifications and access to international labour markets.

Learning languages

Our language programmes combine in-person teaching with digital learning opportunities.

The courses follow European educational and examination standards. Alongside language skills, we also teach the abilities and behaviours expected in training and the workplace: reliability, punctuality, personal responsibility, mutual respect and professional conduct.

Our approach centres on teaching in which language is actively used. Speaking, comprehension and practical exercises are just as important as grammar and vocabulary – with the aim of not only learning a language, but being able to use it confidently in everyday life, training and work.

Dedicated classrooms and a computer and examination room are available for this purpose.

This combination is an integral part of our academic guidelines.

Italian is already a key focus. Further language and qualification programmes are to be expanded gradually.

The digital infrastructure complements in-person teaching and enables learners to deepen their understanding, become familiar with examination formats and prepare step by step for further language examinations.

Preparing for qualifications

Anyone who wants to begin vocational training, study at university or pursue an international career needs more than a language certificate.

That is why we see our language school as part of a broader educational pathway.

The Smiling Coast Academy aims, in the long term, to combine vocational training, practical experience and language qualifications. The language school provides the linguistic foundation and prepares learners for the demands of training, university study and work. The underlying model combines professional qualifications, certified language proficiency and access to European labour markets.

This is not about preparing people for an examination as quickly as possible.

It is about preparing them so that they can genuinely succeed after gaining their qualifications – in vocational training, at university or in regular employment.

Making local certification possible

A crucial part of our approach is access to recognised language examinations directly in The Gambia.

Helping Hands Academy already has an examination structure in place for Italian. Through its collaboration with UNILAB / Mediterranea Hub, Helping Hands Academy is involved as a reference and examination centre for CECOL language certification.

Our long-term aim is to develop this infrastructure further and make additional internationally recognised examination pathways available in The Gambia. The existing computer workstations and organisational structures are already designed for modern examination formats.

This matters to us because a good language course alone does not provide a qualification that can be used internationally.

Learning and demonstrating competence must go hand in hand.

Creating opportunities

Many young people in The Gambia want to work, develop their skills and take responsibility for their future.

When training, recognised qualifications and realistic career opportunities are lacking, some see so-called “Backway” migration as one of the few remaining options.

This is precisely where we want to create alternatives.

Our aim is not to tell people where they should live.

We want to give them real choices.

Those who want to build their future in The Gambia should have access to better educational and career opportunities.

And those who choose a path to Europe should, wherever possible, be able to take it legally, well prepared and qualified – with language skills, recognised qualifications and realistic prospects for training or employment. The International Language Hub & Testing Center concept describes precisely this role as a professional bridge for skilled workers and trainees from The Gambia.

Arriving legally also means finding a professional footing

For us, migration is not successful simply because someone receives a visa or residence permit.

It is successful when a person is prepared to enter vocational training, university study or regular employment.

Language skills, professional qualifications and an understanding of workplace requirements should therefore, wherever possible, be developed before departure.

This is intended to prevent people from reaching Europe but then remaining outside mainstream education and employment in the long term because they lack the necessary language skills or qualifications.

We aim for a different path:

well prepared with the necessary qualifications, entering legally and able to participate in the regular labour market from the outset.

Education as an alternative to the Backway

Helping Hands Academy e.V. believes that lasting prospects emerge where people are given real opportunities.

That is why we want to strengthen two pathways at the same time:

Making a future in The Gambia possible.
Through education, vocational training, qualifications and better career opportunities.

Making legal international pathways possible.

Through language skills, certified qualifications and structured preparation for training and work abroad.

In this way, migration becomes not an escape into the unknown, but – where it is desired and possible – a well-prepared educational or career path.

Our goal

The language school of the Smiling Coast Academy aims to do more than help people speak a new language.

It aims to help turn talent into qualifications, qualifications into opportunities and opportunities into a genuine choice.

Learn. Qualify. Certify. Create opportunities.

For a Gambia where building a future does not begin with leaving – and where those who do leave can do so well prepared and through legal channels.

Together for a better future.
