New TUI Junior Academy brings hands-on environmental education to 30 schools in Gambia

With a new TUI Junior Academy in The Gambia, TUI Care Foundation is expanding its international education programme. Its local partner is the Gambian environmental organisation Green-Up Gambia.

300 students from 30 schools in six regions will take part in regional environmental bootcamps. Topics include climate change, deforestation, biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, water and waste management. Excursions to natural areas such as Tanji Bird Reserve, Abuko Nature Reserve and Kiang West National Park combine classroom learning with direct experience.

In addition, 30 teachers will receive training to embed environmental and climate topics in everyday school life over the long term. Participating schools will implement their own practical projects, such as school gardens or tree nurseries. Peer learning and environmental clubs aim to reach around 7,500 additional students.

From Helping Hands Academy’s perspective, the hands-on approach is particularly interesting: learning has an even greater impact when knowledge is connected with concrete action and the local environment.
