How our projects take shape

The projects of Helping Hands Academy e.V. do not originate at a desk. They grow out of specific needs, personal relationships, many years of experience and direct dialogue with people, institutions and partners in Gambia. Our aim is not to carry out as many individual projects as possible. What matters to us is whether an idea is genuinely needed, whether it can be sustained locally and whether it leads to an improvement that will last. Our work focuses in particular on education, health, and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH). Behind this is a shared goal: to improve living conditions sustainably and create opportunities – so that people can build a future where they call home.
How Helping Hands Academy projects take shape

Rooted in specific needs

Many of our projects begin with a simple observation or a conversation. A school has too few toilets. A health centre urgently needs better equipment. Children lose hours every day because clean water is far away. Young people need training and genuine career prospects. Such situations do not automatically become projects. First, we listen, talk to people locally and try to understand what is actually needed. Often, it is not ideas or motivation that are lacking. What is missing is reliable structures, experience in implementation and long-term support. This is precisely where Helping Hands Academy e.V. can help.

Working together, not imposing from outside

We do not want to bring ready-made solutions to Gambia and then look for a problem to fit them. Our projects are developed together with the people who understand the situation and will take responsibility for them in the future. Schools, health centres, communities, local organisations, professionals and our partners on the ground contribute their knowledge and experience. Helping Hands Academy e.V. complements these with its network, organisational structures, international contacts and experience gained through many years of cooperation in Gambia. This creates solutions that are not merely well-intentioned, but can also work under the actual conditions on the ground.

Realistic planning

A good idea alone is not enough. Before an idea becomes a project, we take a close look: Does it align with the goals of Helping Hands Academy e.V.? Is there a clearly identifiable need? Who will take responsibility locally? Is implementation realistic? How can the solution be operated, maintained or developed further afterwards? We do not want to make projects as large as possible. We want to develop them so that they work. Sometimes that means starting smaller. Sometimes it means strengthening existing structures rather than building something entirely new.

Thinking long term

For us, a project does not end with a handover, a photograph or an opening ceremony. Sustainable development happens where local responsibility meets reliable support. That is why we try to consider what will happen after implementation from the very beginning of the planning process. Who will maintain a facility? Who will handle repairs? What costs will arise later? Who will feel responsible? This is precisely why we prefer to work with established, reliable local structures.

Our goal is support that not only reaches people, but lasts.

Creating opportunities

Our projects can be very different from one another. At first glance, a WASH project at a school has little in common with medical care or a language school. Yet they pursue the same goal. People should have better opportunities to shape their own lives. Children should be able to learn. Women should have access to safe medical care. Clean water and hygienic sanitation should not be the exception. Young people should find training, work and prospects for the future. A central part of our work is therefore to create alternatives to a lack of prospects and to so-called “Backway” migration – not through promises, but through concrete opportunities on the ground.

For a Gambia where building a future does not begin with leaving.

Not every good project needs to be reinvented.

Sometimes what it needs most is structure, experience and a reliable framework.

Not every project has to start with us

People are working to support Gambia in many different ways. Some have supported a school, a community or a social institution for years. Others have developed their own project through personal relationships and devote considerable effort to it. We do not want to take over that commitment. We do not want to claim projects as our own. We want to help people carry out their own projects more effectively.

A shared home for commitment

When a project fits our goals and our way of working, cooperation with Helping Hands Academy e.V. can open up new opportunities.
Helping Hands Academy as a shared framework for projects, people, partners and structures
The people who know, developed and manage the project remain responsible for it. At the same time, they can become part of a larger community and make use of existing structures. Over many years, contacts, experience and structures have developed in Germany and Gambia that we would also like to make available to others who are committed to making a difference. Being part of Helping Hands Academy e.V. can create opportunities that would be difficult for individuals to access on their own. These may include:
  • Experience and contacts in Gambia
  • Support with organisation and project planning
  • Existing local networks
  • Shared communication and administrative structures
  • Support with procurement and logistics
  • Opportunities and special terms available to nonprofit organisations
  • Digital tools and professional software solutions
  • Contacts with companies, supporters, institutions and other organisations
  • Sharing experience with an international team
The aim is not to bring every project under the umbrella of Helping Hands Academy e.V. It is about working together where joint action makes sense and benefits both sides.

Stronger together

If you are already involved in Gambia, you do not necessarily have to organise everything on your own. Perhaps you already have a good idea, a functioning project or longstanding personal relationships – but lack certain contacts, experience or structures. We want to be someone you can approach. Not as an organisation that says: “Give us your project.” But as a community that asks: “What are you already doing – and can we make it stronger together?” When values, goals and ways of working align, a long-term partnership can develop.

Your project remains your project. But perhaps you do not have to make the journey alone.

Lasting impact

Our projects should not be measured by how many we carry out at the same time. What matters is what changes. A child who can attend school regularly. A woman who can give birth more safely. A school with functioning sanitation. A community with clean water. A young person with training and a genuine career prospect. Helping Hands Academy e.V. is therefore not a single project. It grew out of shared experiences, established relationships and the conviction that sustainable development works best when it is shaped together and on equal terms.

Are you already involved in Gambia?

Do you manage your own project, already work with people or institutions in Gambia, or have you developed a concrete initiative through your longstanding connection with the country? If you feel that working with Helping Hands Academy e.V. could help you move forward, we would like to hear from you. Tell us about your project and what you are already doing.
