Smiling Coast Academy
The Smiling Coast Academy is the education and training division of Helping Hands Academy e.V.
Our goal is not to view education in isolation from people’s future lives. Learning should prepare people for concrete professional opportunities – in The Gambia itself or, if an international pathway is pursued, for legal and well-prepared access to training and employment abroad.
To achieve this, we are gradually developing a system in which education, practical experience, language skills, certification and professional opportunities are interconnected.
It is not about offering as many individual courses as possible.
It is about creating pathways that can lead to real employment.
The Smiling Coast Academy is not a single educational project.
It is developing a structure in which different areas of training are interconnected and complement one another. The basic idea is simple:

Because a qualification is particularly valuable when it can actually be put to use afterwards.
Our programmes should focus on areas where there is real demand.
These include, in particular, practical vocational fields such as gastronomy, hospitality and services, as well as additional areas of training in the future.
Training should not take place exclusively in the classroom.
Wherever possible, we aim to combine theory with practical experience.
In this way, people should not only know how something works, but also have learned how to apply it under real-world conditions.
Hospitality & Training is a key development area of the Smiling Coast Academy.
A training structure is planned that directly combines vocational qualification with a real hospitality operation.
In the long term, an environment is to be developed on a site of approximately 6.5 hectares in Brufut, where training and practical experience go hand in hand.

Planned learning and practical training opportunities include areas such as:
- Kitchen
- Service
- Guest Services
- Organisation
- Housekeeping
- Hospitality Management

The distinctive approach is that practical experience should not merely be simulated.
In the long term, training and real-world operations are intended to become part of one integrated system.
This area is currently still in the project and development stage. Its setup, financing, infrastructure and training structures are being developed step by step.
Project status: under developmentLanguage is an important part of this system.
Anyone wishing to study internationally, begin vocational training or work abroad needs not only professional skills, but often also verifiable language proficiency.
For this purpose, the Smiling Coast Academy has its own dedicated area with its Language School / International Language Hub & Testing Center.
Here, we combine language instruction, digital learning and recognised examination pathways.
The Italian language programme is already operationally established, while additional language and certification programmes are being developed step by step.
Language SchoolNot every educational pathway has to lead abroad.
On the contrary.
One of the key goals of the Smiling Coast Academy is to create qualifications that also open up better professional opportunities within The Gambia itself.
Well-trained professionals are needed in many sectors.
When training, practical experience and employment opportunities are better connected, opportunities are created where people call home.

At the same time, we do not want to ignore reality:
Many young people in The Gambia would like to gain international educational or professional experience. Our goal is not to discourage them from pursuing this ambition.
We want to help ensure that such pathways can be pursued in a well-prepared, qualified and legal manner.
People should not arrive in Europe only to discover that they lack the necessary language skills, qualifications or professional recognition.
Those who choose an international pathway should, wherever possible, already have the linguistic, professional and personal prerequisites needed to enter regular training or employment.
This creates a genuine alternative to irregular migration:
not an escape into the unknown, but a well-prepared pathway with real prospects.
Helping Hands Academy e.V. also includes programmes that go beyond the traditional training areas of the Smiling Coast Academy. One example of this is Field First Aid.
The programme prepares people to remain capable of acting even when emergency services, equipment and medical infrastructure are not readily available.
The current focus is on training in Germany and digital learning formats. In the future, Field First Aid may also be integrated more closely into international training and deployment preparation.
The Smiling Coast Academy is intentionally designed as a growing system.
Not all areas are currently at the same stage of development.
Some structures are already active, while others are being established or are still in the project development stage.
With every new training programme, every partnership and every functioning structure, the system continues to grow.
Our long-term goal is an educational platform that:
- enables qualifications,
- provides practical experience,
- teaches recognised skills,
- opens up employment opportunities,
- and gives people real choices for their future.
For a Gambia where the future does not begin with leaving – and where those who do leave can do so prepared and through legal pathways.
Together for a better future.
