Nyofelleh, 18 May 2026 | Kombo South | Gambia
Our new solar-powered water system in Nyofelleh has been completed and is now operating. For the first time, several families and their vegetable gardens have a reliable water supply – just in time before the rainy season increasingly hampers construction and transport work on site.
Where water previously had to be hauled laboriously from a simple well using a bucket and rope, a borehole around 40 metres deep, a solar pump and a 5,000-litre elevated tank now provide water reliably.
Around five family compounds are currently connected directly. But the impact goes further: the water makes it possible to irrigate larger vegetable gardens, creating better conditions for growing vegetables and other crops – even during the long dry season. This not only improves supply but also creates additional income opportunities for families in the village.
For Helping Hands Academy e.V., Nyofelleh is also an important pilot project. Here, we are gaining practical experience of solar-powered water pumping, storage, distribution and use under real conditions in Gambia. This knowledge will feed directly into the planning of further water projects.
Nyofelleh shows what becomes possible when water is reliably available: water supply opens the way to cultivation, income and new opportunities.
